The Roscoe Pound Medal of Honor

Right Worshipful Roscoe Pound, Dean of Harvard Law School

The Roscoe Pound Medal of Honor was created to recognize distinguished or outstanding community service by a non Masonic organization or individual (man or woman) whose actions exemplify a shared concern for the well-being of Mankind and a belief in the worldwide Brotherhood of Man. To qualify, the nominee must be distinguished for outstanding contributions of time, skills and financial support given freely toward truly significant endeavors in the interest of mankind as a whole, and or their given community.

A maximum of two recipients are to be chosen annually from submissions made by the Lodge membership to the Standing Committee, who will in turn investigate and decide who the recipient(s) of this honor will be. The medal will be presented at the Lodge’s annual homecoming dinner.

Pound is best known for advancing the "theory of social interests" in law, asserting that law must recognize the needs of humanity, and take contemporary social conditions into account. Pound's work inspired many including Franklin Delano Roosevelt who utilized Pound's theory in constructing the New Deal program of the 1930s.
